Hi, I’m Dr. Sharla Berry

I started Black Girl Rising LA in 2020 as a way to connect Black women, women of color, and our supporters to wellness resources. Over time, I expanded the project to focus directly on the relationship between work and wellness. In my own life, I found that art was the mediating factor. My ability to be creative and playful was directly tied to my sense of freedom and well-being.

At Black Girl Rising LA, I offer creative practices to others. I facilitate workshops focusing on creative self-recovery, a process of using art, rest, and play to come home to oneself. The workshops use a variety of methods, including zine-making and collage, to provide participants with a space to reflect and take a break from the grind.

I also do research about a range of work-related topics, including burnout, misogynoir in the workplace, boundary-setting, and holistic leadership. Because while I believe that rest is important, it is equally important for us to create professional environments that we can come back to. I partner with organizations and community groups looking to facilitate spaces of creative rest, as well as those looking to have critical conversations about work.
